Police chief pulls up PCR, traffic police

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 7 .Sending a strong and clear message that there is no room for any unprofessional conduct, the Delhi Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, today took the Police Control Room and the Traffic Police staff to task, asking them to adhere to the book while patrolling the Capital. Dr. Paul also issued a set of instructions directing them to follow them strictly.

Dr. Paul observed that the attitude of the PCR staff needed to be monitored more closely. "PCR personnel need to be briefed on the courtesies to be extended to the public. The response should be comforting and helpful to the aggrieved. The custom of addressing people by sir/madam should be encouraged and standard response in Hindi or English should be prepared," he said.

As per his order, the recently- purchased 50 vehicles, which have been lying unused for quite some time, should be deployed at vulnerable places to improve effectiveness of the PCR unit. "PCR vans should be visible in vulnerable areas and stretches of important roads, particularly at night. There should be a fresh orientation in the unit," he said, adding that the unit should carry out exercises for intercepting vehicles moving under suspicious circumstances at least once a week to adjudge the operational effectiveness. This apart, he asked the PCR unit and the district police to improve their response time to distress calls.

As for Traffic Police, Dr. Paul directed the senior officers to be more visible on the roads so that they were be able to note the problems and take necessary steps immediately. "For instance, in Daryaganj traffic circle, the most important points appear to be Delhi Gate crossing, Rajghat crossing, I.P. flyover, places around Ramlila Ground. The Daryaganj traffic inspector (TI) is not seen at any of these places. If the TI cannot be seen at important intersections, what does he do in the lanes and by-lanes," he asked, adding that during peak hours, TIs and Assistant Commissioners of Police would be on the road to ensure a smooth traffic flow instead of waiting for instructions from senior officers.

Dr. Paul said traffic personnel deployed around important locations like Rashtrapati Bhawan, North-South Blocks, Prime Minister's Office and other places, should have an element of smartness, better behaviour and agility. They should do their jobs professionally, without indulging in things like playing cards while waiting for the arrival of VIPs on route duty.
