Retaining wall along Sanganur Canal

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, FEB. 7 . In what could be termed happy tidings for the people of a host of residential colonies in Meena Estate and Puliakulam areas in the city, the Public Works Department is constructing a 200-metre retaining wall along the Sanganur Canal, whose weak bunds had consistently flooded the colonies every monsoon.

With Rs. 20 lakhs contributed by the Coimbatore MP, C.P. Radhakrishnan, from his Constituency Development Fund, the work is on at full pace, and expected to be completed soon.

The retaining wall will help eliminate breaches that had occurred too frequently over the last many years. Heavy rain had always brought with it certainty that the bunds will breach.

The Coimbatore Corporation had replaced a low-level causeway in this area with a bridge as part of the efforts to prevent flooding. Blocks below the causeway had caused flooding on either side of the canal. The bridge and the retaining wall together are seen as a comprehensive solution to the entire problem.
