KOZHIKODE, FEB. 8. The National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NITC), is planning to launch Technology Business Incubator (TBI), a place where budding entrepreneurs can find a way to execute their business ideas. According to an NITC release, TBIs have been successfully experimented across the world to stimulate the growth of technology-based enterprises with the help of technical manpower and infrastructure available at educational and research institutions. TBIs help in incubating knowledge-based start-ups into sustainable businesses by providing guidance and support. In India, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India is supporting a number of leading educational and research organisations to set up TBIs. The TBI at NITC is also a venture supported by the DST. The DST has sanctioned Rs. 1.55 crores for equipment and recurring cost for five years. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs. 2.5 crores. The rest of the investment will come from the NITC as land, building and other infrastructure facilities. The TBI at NITC will receive support from a number of technical, management and financial institutions, including the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) and DOEACC Calicut Centre in guiding the entrepreneurs. Information Technology (IT) and Electronics are the thrust areas of the TBI of the NITC. However, project proposals from other areas will also be considered based on their technology content and suitability to get incubated at NITC. The TBI will provide the necessary infrastructure facilities for the units, like work space, computers, connectivity, etc., at concessional rates. The NITC also pitches in with technical support to the units through its faculty and students. The units may also use the other facilities of the institute like library, computer centre, laboratories, etc. These units will have to move out from the TBI normally after three years or when they attain self-sustainability. The NITC is expecting potential entrepreneurs with viable and high-tech business ideas to set up units at the TBI. Information about the project can be had from the Department of Training, Placement and Linkage of the NITC or over telephone numbers, 0495 2286604 or 2286605.
