TDP rejects Sonia charge

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB 8. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has rejected the contention of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Sonia Gandhi, that the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, was a product of dynastic rule in Andhra Pradesh.

Describing the statement as an exposure of her "political hollowness", the TDP spokesman, Ummareddy Venkateswarlu, said Mr. Naidu joined politics as a student leader and became an MLA and Minister several years before the TDP was launched. In 1978 when he was first elected to the Assembly, he was not NTR's son-in-law even.

Talking to reporters here today, Mr. Venkateswarlu said Mr. Naidu held key positions in the party and the Government before becoming the Chief Minister in 1995. His rise to power could not be compared to the rule of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.

Asserting that the comparison was unwise, he said the TDP had no objection to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka entering politics but it was improper on Ms. Gandhi's part to criticise Mr. Naidu of pursuing dynastic rule.
