KOCHI, FEB. 8. The Archbishop of Varapuzha, Daniel Acharuparambil, has urged the Government to conduct special recruitment to help members of the Latin Catholic community secure jobs that they were eligible for. "The community will fight for their rights," he said in his inaugural address at a meet of the Latin Catholic community, which was organised by the Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA) at Rajendra Maidan today. Referring to the delay in implementing the recommendations of the Narendran Commission report, Dr. Acharuparambil said that the Government should ensure the representation of Latin Catholics in the Public Service Commission and universities in the State. He said that the Government should initiate immediate steps for establishing the Vallarpadom Container Trans-shipment Terminal project. The introduction of the terminal would help in the overall development of Kochi, he added. Dr.Acharuparambil said the rights of the community in the educational sector should be protected. He called upon the community to work towards achieving progress in the socio-economic and educational areas. He said that the 20-lakh strong community would not rest until the Government met its demands. The Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC) would take the lead in bringing the community together, he said. Speaking on the occasion, K.V. Thomas, Minister for Tourism and Fisheries, said that the Government had initiated talks for implementing the recommendations of the Narendran Commission report. Prof.Thomas said that the Government had introduced various welfare measures for Latin Catholic fishermen.
