Vande Mataram health scheme launched

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB 9. The district-level inauguration of the "Vande Mataram" scheme, aimed at checking spiralling maternal mortality rate in the country, was launched at the Lourdes Hospital today. The Deputy Mayor of Kochi Corporation, A.V. George, inaugurated the programme.

The scheme envisages provision of free out patient department (OPD) services, including antenatal check-up of all pregnant women and family planning counselling to new mothers regularly by the government and private doctors at their facility on the 9th of every month.

This scheme will be implemented in both Government and private hospitals. This is expected to improve the access of pregnant women to antenatal check-up and reduce maternal and neonatal deaths. The public health facilities of the Government would also observe the 9th of every month as `Vande Mataram Day' and provide priority to expectant mothers.

The Government would provide antenatal drugs, Vitamin A, and vaccines to the private clinics for use by pregnant women. It will also provide Vande Mataram cards to expectant mothers.

Father Francis Xavier, the Director of Lourdes Hospital, presided over the function. The Deputy District Medical Officer, V. K. Krishnan Kutty and the District RCH Officer, Jaya Lalmohan, participated.
