New SSLC exam system from next year

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. FEB. 9. A new examination system and awarding of grades will be introduced for the SSLC examinations from the academic year 2004-05. According to a press release issued here today, the State Government had passed the necessary orders for the same.

The new system had already been put in place for standards one to nine.

There will be three parts for evaluation for standard 10. In part one, the intellectual acumen of the students will be evaluated. There will be written examinations for 13 subjects, including IT, in this section. These examinations will be for two hours and will carry 50 marks. In section one, the total marks for written examinations will thus be 650 and for internal assessment 250.

The areas being evaluated under section two will be work experience, study of arts, health and sports education. Here, the co-curricular achievements of the students will be gauged; each subject carries 30 marks.

For part three, the personality development and social awareness of a student will be evaluated. Group activity skills, communication skills, leadership traits, punctuality and participation in school club activities will be the basis for evaluation in this part.

For group one, there will be nine levels; A+ for those scoring between 90 and 100 per cent, A for those scoring 80 to 89, B+ for 70 to 79, B for 60 to 69, C+ for 50 to 59, C for 40 to 49, D+ for 30 to 39, D for 20 to 29 and E, for those scoring below 20 per cent marks.

In group two and three, there will be five levels of grading, A to E. Those scoring 75 per cent and above, group two, will get grade A, those scoring 60 to 74 per cent, B, those in the 45 to 59 range, C, those scoring 30 to 44 per cent, D, while those scoring below 30 per cent will get E.

Under the new evaluation system, there will be greater emphasis on the written examination. Through evaluating the curricular and co-curricular achievements of students, the many facets of their personality will be graded, instead of just awarding them some marks. Instead of merely testing the students during the year-end examinations, there will be a continuous evaluation of the students throughout the academic year. The new system offers scope for improving the SSLC results without losing out on the academic year. The grading system does away with the concept of passing or failing an examination; there will be no place for unscientific granting of moderation and for unhealthy competition between children. The quality of teacher-student relationships will also go up.
