East Bengal beats Geylang

KOLKATA, FEB. 10. Kingfisher East Bengal continued its brilliant form overseas beating Geylang United Club 3-2 in the opening Group E league match of the AFC Cup in Singapore, according to information received here.

The defending National Football League champion found its new Brazilian recruit, Cristiano Junior, scoring the teams first two goals. The first session of the match — played under lights at the Bedok Stadium — saw the home side open the scoring through Hafiz Rehman in the 40th minute. East Bengal got the equaliser in the 44th minute to have the first half ending with honours even.

The second session saw East Bengal doubling its attacks as Junior found the net off a Baichung Bhutia assist in the 75th minute. Bijen Singh scored the third goal in the 83rd minute to have East Bengal building on the lead. The host pulled one back in the first minute of injury-time through Jeyapal.

Having started with a win in the first `away' match, East Bengal will be in a comfortable position hosting the Malaysian club Negri Sembilan in the next league match on February 25.
