By Our Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL, FEB.11 . The work on establishing a bypass road from Kaliancadu to Erachakulam near here commenced on Monday. It was inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Pon.Radhakrishnan, at a function held at Kaliancadu near here. The former MLA, C. Velayuthan, presided.

Spanning a distance of six km, the bypass road project would decongest the traffic in the town and provide an alternate route to the vehicles going to Tirunelveli or Kanyakumari from Thiruvananthapuram. This route would facilitate the road users to save running time. About Rs.2.72 crores had been allocated for executing the project. Mr. Radhakrishnan said the project had been taken up with funds provided by the Central Road Development Fund and the work would be completed soon. Financial assistance of nearly Rs.6 crores had been obtained from the Central Road Development Fund to improve the Nagercoil-Rajakkamangalam-Colachel Road, the Marthandam-Pechiparai Road and the Marthandam-Karungal Road. These works would be taken up soon, he added.
