By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA, FEB. 11. The cine artiste, Priyanka, who had been arrested from Alappuzha on charges of cheating and extortion on Tuesday, was remanded to judicial custody by the Judicial First Class Magistrate in Thiruvalla today.

According to the police, the accused had tried to blackmail another cine actress from Thiruvalla, Kaveri, threatening her that a `defamatory' story on the latter's family would be published in a Malayalam periodical if she failed to give Rs. 5 lakhs to her.

Ms. Kaveri's mother had approached the Thiruvalla police who laid a trap to nab the accused, later. As directed by the Sub-Inspector, K.B. Prafullachandran, Kaveri's mother had `settled' the `extortion amount' with the accused at Rs. 3 lakhs and had agreed to hand over an `advance' of Rs. 1 lakh to her at a spot fixed on the National Highway in Alappuzha.

Both parties met at the decided place on Monday and Ms. Priyanka was caught red-handed during the `cash' transaction, according to the SI. Meanwhile, Ms. Priyanka, who fell unconscious in the court hall today, was admitted to the Taluk Hospital in Thiruvalla, the police said.
