Measures to check spread of cattle disease
By Our Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM,
FEB. 11.
To save the cattle from `botulism,' which has recently claimed the lives of five head of cattle (official figure is two), the District Collector, K. Gopal, has called upon the local community to restrict grazing.
Mr. Gopal, who visited the Su. Pilrampattu, Vedalam and Appananthal near here today, said the disease was confined to these villages. Three experts from the Veterinary College in Chennai also accompanied the Collector.
The Collector said the villagers buried the carcasses of the cattle died of botulism on the tank bunds. Since, the soil would be infested with the disease causing germs, the cattle that grazed in the area would also get infected.
Hence, Mr. Gopal advised the villagers not to graze the cattle in those areas. He even proposed to put up fencing around the tanks in those places. He said the disease would affect only bullocks.
