Yasin Malik, Shabir Shah held
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR,
FEB. 11.
Police today arrested the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik, and the Democratic Freedom Party president, Shabir Shah, and a dozen others when they were going in a procession towards the United Military Observers Group headquarters at Sonwar here.
The arrests were made even as pitched battles between police and the supporters of the front marked the strike on the eve of the death anniversary of the front's founder, Maqbool Bhat. Mr. Malik and Mr. Shah were prevented from handing over a memorandum to the observers, demanding that the remains of Bhat be handed over to Kashmiris. (Bhat was hanged in the Tihar jail on February 11, 1984). Even as the leaders resisted, police took them away in vehicles and lodged them in the Rambagh police station.
The JKLF vice-chairman, Javed Mir, were among those arrested.
