Call to develop Thrissur as `education destination'

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, FEB.11. The Joint Director of the Kerala Police Academy (KPA) and IG, Alexander Jacob, today said that Thrissur district was fast developing as an education destination and appealed to the people to develop this potential to the maximum extent.

Dr. Jacob, who is also the president of the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) of the Central School, Puranattukara in the outskirts of the city, made this observation while replying to a felicitation accorded to him by the association for winning the President's Police Medal this year.

He said with the establishment of the KPA at Ramavarmapuram near the city, similar training institutions for the personnel of the Fire Brigade, Excise and Forest Departments were being started in Thrissur. The district now has three medical colleges, eight engineering colleges, 24 arts and science colleges as well as 30 Plus II schools.

The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), which has 32 institutions under it across the State, is headquartered in the district.

The presence of the P.C. Thomas Entrance Coaching Centre that has 16,500 students has made Thrissur a major destination for such coaching.

Institutions such as the Kerala Institute for Local Administration (KILA), Mulankunnathukavu, have raised the significance of the district as a provider of training input for strengthening local governance in the State, Dr. Jacob said.

The district is already known as the cultural capital of the State because of the presence of the bodies such as the Kerala Sahithya Akademi.

But the recent developments indicate that it may soon become the educational destination of the State, he said.
