BELLARY, FEB. 11. G. Umesh, Bellary Zilla Panchayat President, has asked the officials to gear up to tackle water scarcity in summer. He was presiding over the monthly meeting to review the progress of implementation of development programmes here on Wednesday. Mr. Umesh said: "All the officials concerned, including the Executive Engineers of the zilla panchayat Engineering Division, Executive Officers of taluk panchayats, officials of the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (GESCOM), and gram panchayat secretaries should make efforts to solve the drinking water problem in rural areas without giving any excuses and without delay. In case the work does not fall in one's jurisdiction, the officials should take up the matter with the person concerned and ensure that the drinking water problem was solved," he said. He said the Executive Officers of the taluk panchayats should be in constant touch with the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) officials to resolve the problem pertaining to power. G.S. Shivaswamy, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, said that the programmes were in full swing to achieve 100 per cent literacy and provide sanitation to all houses at Bhuvanahalli, which had been adopted by the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna. He asked the District Health Officer to take steps to contain and prevent the outbreak of contagious diseases such as cholera, malaria, and gastro-enteritis in the district. Mr. Shivaswamy wanted the officials of various departments to achieve the targeted progress pertaining to 2003-04 before the end of the financial year.
