COIMBATORE, FEB. 11. Subscribers staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Principal General Manager, BSNL, in the city today over the disconnection of nearly 6,000 telephone lines in the Coimbatore Secondary Switching Area (SSA). The lines were disconnected over alleged default in payment of phone bills, dated January 7, 2004. The protestors termed the disconnection `unjustified', as they had not received the bills. The worst-hit area was Ramanathapuram, which came under the `231' level. Subsequently, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in a release, said that the disconnected lines would be restored and duplicate bills would be sent to the subscribers. It has given two weeks for subscribers to pay their bills. In the first week, payment could be made in the already designated post offices, banks and cash counters at the office of the Principal General Manger, Telecom (PGMT). In the second week, payment would be accepted only at the counters in the PGMT's office. If the bills were paid in two weeks, no surcharge or reconnection charge would be collected, the release said.
