MADURAI, FEB.11. Students of the Madurai Kamaraj University College on the Alagar Koil Road here boycotted classes and staged a demonstration protesting non-payment of scholarships to SC, ST, BC and MBC students, today. They criticised the college management for "insisting on immediate payment of fees" and demanded provision of better facilities in the college campus. Activists of the Students Federation of India raised slogans demanding payment of scholarship, which they said, had been due since last year. The students alleged that SC and ST students were being directed to pay college fees when the scholarships had not been disbursed. They said several students of the college hailed from villages and they were totally dependent on the scholarships given by the Government. Some of the students also criticised the college for conducting classes on Saturdays "when there is no bus pass." Police personnel reached the spot, as the students came onto the road, boycotting classes. Later, the students, led by Kasinathan, SFI district president, went to the Collectorate and submitted a memorandum to the officials.
