Foundation laid for sports school

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. Feb. 11. The Public Works Minister, M.K. Muneer, has said the first phase of the construction of the G.V. Raja Sports School at Mylam would be completed in a year. The Minister was speaking at a function organised to inaugurate the construction activities for the school. At the function, the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, laid the foundation stone for the school, while Dr. Muneer laid the foundation stone for the hostel and the library.

Blood donation movement

In a bid to strengthening the blood donation movement in the State, the student wing of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL) have decided to jointly launch a project, initially involving the students of the Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. Announcing the launching of the pilot project, T. Suresh Kumar, of the IMA, and M. Ayyappan, the Managing Director of the HLL, said that if found successful, it would be extended to cover students of all the medical colleges in the State.

New phone exchange

The Vellarada telephone exchange will commence functioning from its new premises from 4 p.m. on Friday, a press note issued by the BSNL said today. Once the new, 3000-line exchange starts functioning subscribers will have to re-register their secret codes for the dynamic barring of STD/ISD calls. However, there will be no change in the existing numbers, those for trunk booking and for other special services. Further information can be had from phone numbers 2242198 or 2244444.

Assumes charge

P.A.M. Kunju has assumed charge as the head of the Department of Paediatric Neurology at the Medical College Hospital, here. A press note said here that Dr. Kunju was the first person to take charge as the head of this department.

Dharna held

Activists of the Kerala Health Inspectors' Union held a march to the Secretariat and a dharna to press for their various demands including the ending of delays in granting promotions. The march began from the Health Directorate.

School admission

Registration for admission to standards 1, 2 and 5 at the Government UPS, Kumarapuram, will commence on February 16. The school will be offering both English and Malayalam medium classes.
