NEW DELHI, FEB. 12. The Union Government is in favour of a proposal envisaging development of "Economic growth clusters" in urban and rural areas for faster economic growth in the next five years. Indicating this today, S. Narayan, Economic Advisor to PMO, said the Cabinet had already approved the concept of developing growth clusters and 5,000 rural clusters had been identified for the purpose. This had to be extended to the urban areas too. Mr. Narayan, who was speaking at a seminar organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Bombay Chamber of Commerce (BCCI) here, said if infrastructure that restricted certain activities were created, the growth in the urban areas could be faster. The rural clusters were equally important as these could lead to provision of various amenities that would boost agriculture production. The BCCI President and IDFC Managing Director, Nasser Munjee, said at least two national clusters needed to be developed Mumbai-Pune-Nashik and Delhi-Noida-Gurgaon. The other three clusters could be around Kolkata-Haldia, Chennai-Pondicherry-Bangalore and Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam.
