DINDIGUL, FEB. 12. Work on the gauge conversion project between Madurai and Manamadurai will be completed by 2005 and between Manamadurai and Mandapam by 2006, the Southern Railway General Manager, V. Anand, said yesterday. Talking to presspersons here, he said conversion of the Madurai and Dindigul section too would be completed during the same period. On completion, there would be two tracks between the two stations. However, he said this was insufficient for passengers and pilgrims coming to Ramanathapuram as they have to change the train to reach the pilgrim centre. Conversion of the Palghat-Dindigul section was essential. Mr. Anand said the Commissioner for Rail Safety, Bangalore, Pranab Kumar Sen, was happy with works executed so far on this route. There is water shortage at some stations in Tamil Nadu and officials have been asked to negotiate with the concerned village panchayats to streamline supply, he said. Good work was done at Pushpathur. The General Manager said solar lights and invertors would be provided at some railways stations between Palghat and Kollangode in Kerala to face frequent power cuts.
