CHENNAI, FEB.12. Two hundred cusecs of water will be released from the Bhavanisagar reservoir in Erode district for 30 days to meet the drinking water requirements of residents of Sathyamangalam, Gobi municipalities and 18 town panchayats in the surrounding areas, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, said here today. In a statement today, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she had been receiving requests from the people seeking release of water from the reservoir, which had storage of 1,756 million cubic feet. And hence, she had ordered the water release from today. Similarly, 40 million cubic feet of water would be released from the Vanniyar reservoir in Pappireddypatti (Dharmapuri district) to meet the drinking water requirements of surrounding villages. The water would be diverted to five lakes at Denhanikotta, Ondhiyampatti, Aalaapuram, Venkatasamudhram and Paraipatti in the old ayacut area of Vaniyar reservoir. Another 10 mcft of water would be released in the right and left bank canals to combat the drought in the new ayacut areas, the Chief Minister added.
