KOTTAYAM, FEB. 12. An atmosphere of tension is prevailing at Puthuppally, near here, where the authorities today tried to pull down an unauthorised structure which was being used as a place of worship by a Pentecostal congregation. According to the police, the situation is under control. The structure , christened Bethel, was being used by believers as their place of worship, in spite of repeated directives from the panchayat authorities to pull it down . Today, the panchayat authorities, along with the RDO and a contingent of the police went over to the place with the intention of dismantling the structure. The believers, mostly belonging to the Dalit community, too had gathered in strength. The RDO engaged in a talk with the believers and it was decided that they would pull it down themselves by March 12. This was however, resented by the panchayat authorities who said the RDO had made an unilateral decision in this regard. They have complained to the district authorities and made their intention clear, to demolish the structure on Friday. They have also asked the District Superintendent of Police to provide police protection for Friday's exercise.
