Coca-Cola: HC extends order on drawing water

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB.12 . A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court today extended by two weeks its interim order directing that status quo be maintained with respect to the drawing of water by the Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Private Limited from its wells at its Plachimada plant in Palakkad till February 12.

The Bench comprising Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice K. Padmanabhan Nair extended the order when a writ appeal filed by the company against a single judge verdict directing the company to stop drawing ground water and find alternative sources of water came up for hearing today.

The court asked the Additional Advocate General, V.K. Beeran, to make available the report, on the basis of which the Water Resources Minister, T.M. Jacob, had issued a recent statement on the water scarcity in the State.

In its earlier interim order on status quo, the court had directed the company to ensure that water meters were installed on each open well and bore wells, if they had not yet been fitted.

The court appointed E.J. James, Director of the Kozhikode-based Centre for Water Resource Development and Management (CWRDM), as convener and coordinator of an expert committee to look into the allegations against the cola company.

The case had been adjourned to February 19 for further hearing.
