TIRUCHI, FEB.12. The Tamil Nadu Retired College Teachers' Association expressed disappointment over the government's `failure' to make any announcement on release of arrears of retirement benefits to them in the budget presented yesterday. In a statement here today, its general secretary, D. Thomas, said the college teachers who retired between January 1, 1996 and June 1, 1998 were waiting for the release of 60 per cent arrears of their retirement benefits but the budget was totally silent on this issue. They have suffered from double injustice in this regard. The State Government received as early as in 1996 the University Grants Commission salary arrears from the Centre. This money was not disbursed to the retirees. This was a wrongful diversion of funds. Moreover, only 40 per cent of the commutation was paid to thee retired persons. But recovery was made as if 100 per cent commutation was paid to them. The Tamil Nadu Varthaga Kazhagam welcomed the tax-free budget. In a press release here today, its president, J. J. L. Gnanaraj, said abolition of agriculture income tax, reduction of sales tax on computer peripherals and spares, waiver of tax on certain life saving and AIDS control drugs, cut in tax rate on handicrafts etc. would benefit the common man.
