CHENNAI, FEB. 12. The Save Pallikaranai Marshland Forum, a conglomerate of residents, naturalists and researchers, has appealed to the Government to declare the Pallikaranai marsh area, from Perungudi to Siruseri, a protected land. According to a press release, the forum has also urged local bodies nearby to immediately stop dumping garbage and releasing untreated sewage into the marsh. It has asked the Government to shift the dumping yard to abandoned quarries at Pallavaram and Pammal, as suggested by biodiversity researchers. The Alandur Municipality should not dump garbage in Pallikaranai, as agreed by the local body, it added. Also, the State Government should constitute a Wetland Authority to protect tanks and marshlands in the State. Last week, the forum organised a programme of `expressions through art' at the marshland on the Thorapakkam-Pallikaranai bypass as part of the International Wetland Day celebrations. About 100 students from nearby schools of Pallikaranai, Thorapakkam and Perungudi, besides women's groups of Mylai Balaji Nagar at Perungudi, through posters and graffiti, expressed their concern over the deteriorating condition of the marsh due to indiscriminate dumping of garbage and release of untreated sewage.
