THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 13. The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, today faxed an appeal to his counterpart in Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa, asking the Tamil Nadu Government to release at least 1,000 million cubic feet (mcft) of water from the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project (PAP) this month itself to save the drought-hit paddy crop of Palakkad district. In his message, Mr. Antony drew Ms. Jayalalithaa's attention to the plight of the Palakkad farmers, whose crop was facing total destruction due to drought. He noted that the irrigation needs of this area were dependent solely on the water released from the PAP. He said Kerala was entitled to receive 7,250 mcft of water in the Manacadavu weir every water year from July 1 to June 30, as per the provisions of the PAP agreement between the two States. There was, actually, a shortfall of 639 mcft of water supplied to Kerala from this project last year. This meant that the State should be given 7,889 mcft of PAP water this year.
