`Cosmeceutical' sales set to gallop, says expert

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM, FEB. 13. The market for "cosmeceutical" products in the global market is projected to grow by 8.5 per cent ($ 5.1 billion) by 2007. India with only two per cent share in the global market has a long way to go, Shashi Kataria, Regional Sales Head-South Asia, CIBA Speciality Chemicals (India) Ltd., Mumbai, has said.

He was addressing a congregation of "cosmeceutical" technologists, manufacturers, students, and teachers of "cosmeceutical" technology after inaugurating the Second Global Congress on "Cosmetic Technologies — emerging trends in technologies and standards in cosmetics" here on Friday. The one-day international congress was organised under the auspices of the Indian Cosmetic Technologists' Association and K.L.E. Society's College of Pharmacy. Nearly 300 delegates from throughout the world participated in the programmes.

With over 560 million people in the 18 to 35 age group, the market for "cosmeceuticals" was immense in India, he said. China and Latin American countries were the other biggest markets. The ability to combine natural ingredients with synthetic ingredients had given cosmetic chemists an almost unlimited palette to create the next big ingredient, he said. Consumers preferred to buy skin-care products that had specific natural ingredients. R.S. Goud, Adviser (UG), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi, said that cosmetic technology was the most neglected part of all technologies and needed to be promoted and encouraged.

Vimla Devi, President of Indian Cosmetic Technologists' Association, said the East and the West could share technological knowledge and arrive at a mutual understanding for an integral development of cosmetics.

D. Bhalchandra Moghe, senior chemist, Coty Inc., U.S., and F.V. Manvi, Secretary of KLE Society secretary, were present. H.B. Rajashekhar, Medical Director of KLE Society, presided over the function.
