Genuine concerns

Sir, — The security concerns expressed by the Indian cricket team captain, Saurav Ganguly, about the players' safety during the proposed tour to Pakistan are genuine. I disagree with the former Pakistan captain, Wasim Akram's dismissal of Saurav's concerns as unfounded. The threat from the "jihadis" is real. Otherwise, Islamabad would not have been converted into a fortress during the Prime Minster, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's recent visit to Pakistan. The Pakistan Cricket Board must make foolproof security arrangements for the Indian team.

Sir, — It appears that the Government is trying to appease the Sangh Parivar hardliners by raising doubts over the possibility of the cricket team playing in Pakistan. Such things go against the spirit of the improving bilateral relationship.

Sir, — The decision to postpone the cricket tour is a wise one, whatever the rationale behind it. The players' safety is of utmost importance. Emotions on both sides during India-Pakistan cricket matches rise to a fever pitch.

Sir, — With the present positive signals in the attitude of the Pakistani public towards us, terrorists have their own well-concealed strategy to sabotage it. Under these circumstances, a favourable security report is not enough to take the risk of a visit to that country. A preventive approach will cause only a momentary disappointment. And it is a better option.
