Leak in IC tunnel of Kakkad project

PATHANAMTHITTA, FEB. 13. A minor leak was detected in Adit-5 of the Inter Connecting (IC) tunnel of the 50-MW Kakkad hydro-electric project at Seethakkuzhy, near Seethathode, this afternoon, according to powerhouse sources at Kakkad.

A major leak in the same Adit-5 of the IC tunnel had led to the shutdown of the hydel project of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) in August 2001. However, KSEB officials were yet to inspect the leak, the sources said. Security has been strengthened in the area.

A leak was noticed in the very same Adit-5 during the trial run of the powerhouse prior to its commissioning in 1999.

The Kakkad hydro-electric project was commissioned in 1999.
