`HOSPIMedica India 2004' inaugurated

HYDERABAD: Pointing out that India accounts for more than 56,000 fatalities in automobile accidents every year, the Director-General of Health Services, Andhra Pradesh, K. Anji Reddy, has called for a comprehensive Emergency Medical Services (EMS)/ trauma systems in all metropolitan cities to reduce the mortality and morbidity. Inaugurating the three-day `HOSPIMedica India 2004, a trade show of the medical industry being held at HITEX here, concurrently with EMERGE'INDIA, a one-day conference on Emergency Medicine and Disaster Management, he said that studies by various organisations, including the World Bank, the World Road Association, have shown that while India has less than four million vehicles, more than 56,000 people die every year. He said that Andhra Pradesh was all set to launch `AP Emergency Medical Services' by April with public-private participation. Mr. Veerabhadraiah, Hyderabad district Collector, inaugurated EMERGE'INDIA. Sangita Reddy, Director-Operations, Apollo Hospitals also spoke. The two events have been organised jointly by Apollo Hospitals and CIDEX Trade Fairs Pvt.Ltd.

Rs. 1.09 crores sanctioned towards cash incentive

Hyderabad: The State Government has accorded sanction of Rs. 1.09 crores towards incentive cash rewards with regard to 134 underground extremists arrested, surrendered or dead. This follows a request made by the Director-General of Police for sanction of additional budget to meet the expenditure on pending bills as well as future expenses. The cash reward is given with a view to facilitating early apprehension of underground extremists, according to a press release.

Christian body plea to Sonia

HYDERABAD: The National Congress of Indian Christians (NCIC) has urged the All India Congress Committee president, Sonia Gandhi, to allot at least 30 seats for the Christian community in the coming Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, as Christians constituted at least 10 per cent of the State's population. In a statement here, NCIC president, C. A. Daniel Adams, said, "We support the Congress because of its secular credentials. But the party has always ignored the Christian community by not giving political representation." Accusing the Congress of exploiting the `Christian vote bank' in all the elections since Independence, he said they had a right to seek seats from the Congress.

Electricity advisory panel reconstituted

Hyderabad: The State Electricity Regulatory Commission has reconstituted the State Electricity Advisory Committee for taking guidance on policy issues and matters relating to standards of performance, quality of service prescribed for Transco and Discoms and compliance on requirements of rules and protection to consumers.

The committee, formed as per the provisions of the Electricity Act of 2003, consists of 17 members, four of them being ex-officio members and the rest representing different sectors -- industry and commerce, transport, agriculture, labour, consumers, NGOs, research bodies etc. The committee will meet once in three months. With this, the previous committee formed under the State's Reforms Act of 1998 stands dissolved. The chairman and three members of the commission have been automatically drafted into the committee. The office-bearers of leading unions of electricity staff such `1104' and `327' also figure in the list.

BJP leaders worship at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: Top leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who have converged at Tirupati, to participate in the BJP State Executive meeting, organised on Friday, offered prayers at the hill temple of Lord Venkateswara, Tirumala. While the Union Minister for Urban Development, Bandaru Dattatreya, participated in the Nijapada darshan seva of the Lord in the early hours of today, the BJP national president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, visited the temple in the afternoon. According to sources, Mr. Dattatreya reportedly held discussions with the TTD authorities regarding implementation of the master plan at Tirumala and the dismantling of the thousand-pillar mandapam. The TTD authorities have also have made the required arrangements for the visit of another Union Minister, U. V. Krishnam Raju, who is also scheduled to visit the temple, on Friday night.

Velugu coordinator's suicide sparks row

Cuddapah: The Proddatur III Town police registered a case pertaining to the suicide of a Velugu community coordinator, Rohini Kumar (28), at his house in Proddatur town, allegedly due to harassment by the Velugu project officials. Kumar, a post-graduate, working as the Velugu community coordinator at Jammalamadugu, hanged himself two days ago. He left a suicide note addressed to his mother, alleging that he worked hard but the Velugu higher-ups `insulted' him by forcing him to stand in the hot sun during a review meeting held at Jammalamadugu, taking objection to him not residing in the cluster villages. The note further said that no coordinator stayed in the cluster villages, but he was singled out and insulted and hence was ending his life. Though he said none were responsible for his death, the police said investigation was on.

Thatched huts destroyed in fire

VIZIANAGARAM: Sixty-five families were rendered homeless after a fire broke out due to a short circuit in Kanimeraka Veedhi in Ramabhadrapuram mandal headquarters destroying several thatched huts at around 1 a.m. on Friday. According to the Mandal Revenue Officer, K. Bala Tripura Sundari, the mishap occurred after the overhead power transmission wires snapped and fell on the house of one, Kanimeraka Appala Swamy, and soon spread to other huts. There were no causalities or injuries to any one, she said. Fire tenders from Salur and Bobbili municipalities reached the village and brought the fire under control. Revenue officials distributed Rs. 1,000 in cash and 10 kg of rice to the victims as relief.

Dry weather in State

Hyderabad: Dry weather prevailed in the State on Friday. There was slight change in the minimum temperature in the State and were below normal at a few places in coastal Andhra and normal in Telangana and Rayalaseema.

Arogyavaram recorded the State's lowest night temperature at 15 degrees C. According to a forecast issued by the State Met Office here, dry weather will continue on Saturday also.

15 hurt in road mishap

Cuddapah: Fifteen persons, including nine women, sustained injuries when a lorry overturned near Chalamareddipalle in Cuddapah mandal on Friday.

About 20 persons of Mruthyunjayakunta in Chinna Chowk panchayat were returning in a lorry after purchasing some goods in Chennai when the mishap occurred. The injured were admitted in the Cuddapah Government hospital.

Four injured in accident

KURNOOL: Four persons were hurt when an auto and a lorry collided at Venkayapalli on the outskirts of the city on Friday. The injured were shifted to the General Hospital here. The auto was badly damaged.

Scribes stage demonstration

KURNOOL: Journalists staged a demonstration here on Friday to protest against the attack on TV journalists at Hyderabad. The protesters wearing black badges shouted slogans at the office of the Reliance Mobile and protested vehemently against the attitude of corporate houses. Protesters turned aggressive when a private photographer was filming and videographing the protesting journalists. The crowd snatched the camera and exposed the film. Earlier, the journalists presented a memorandum to the district Collector expressing their concern over growing attacks on mediamen and urged the Government to take steps to protect working journalists.

Congress campaign

ANANTAPUR: As part of its door-to-door mass-contact cum campaigning the District Congress Committee (DCC) visited ten villages in Singanamala Assembly constituency on Friday. Led by the DCC president, A. Venkatarami Reddy, its general secretary, S. Jayachandra Naidu, and others, Congress leaders knocked every door in these villages and explained

to them the development taken place during the Congress rule and asked voters to support the Congress in the coming elections.

Demonstration on EVM use

ANANTAPUR: A demonstration on the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) was organised for representatives of political parties here on

Friday. Representatives of the Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), who is manufacturing the machines, and an officer of the Revenue Department from East Godavari district explained the use of EVMs. The Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, and other officials were present.

Power connections

MADANAPALLE: Domestic power connections can be had within 24 hours, according to the Divisional Engineer, Madanapalle, K.S.Y. Sheriff. He said at press conference on Friday that complaints of interruptions could be given on telephone numbers 228456 (Madanapalle), 251580 (Punganur), 244358 (Piler) and 257653 (Kalikiri). He said `Vidyut Adalats' would be conducted in every mandal on Mondays. Consumers service centres had been opened at Madanapalle, Punganur, Kalikiri and Piler and applications for connections could be had from these centres and bills paid.

Health camp for children

NIZAMABAD: Around 177 inmates of the Mathosri ashram trust at Sarangapoor were examined at a health check-up camp organised by the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) and the teacher of Art of Living here. The general secretary of IAP, N. Ramchander, said that free medicines to the tune of Rs.10,000 were distributed to children. A team of doctors comprising Suresh Jaju, M. Prabhakar, K. Gopal Singh and Naveen - participated. A health education campaign was also organised.

Cancer detection camp

NIZAMABAD: The Nizamabad branch of the Indian Medical Association and N. Appa Rao F.S.S. Scheme are conducting a free cancer detection camp in the three urban health centres in the town on February 15.

The IMA president, K. Swamy Goud, in a statement on Friday said that the camp would be conducted at urban health centres in Chandrasekharnagar colony, Arsapalli and Indrapur. All women in the age group of 30 to 35 years would be screened to detect cancer of the cervix.

Mock accident shows

KARIMNAGAR: In a novel way to educate vehicle users on the importance of safety, the Karimnagar highway police presented mock accident shows at all accident-prone areas on the busy Karimnagar-Hyderabad and Warangal roads on Friday. The shows depicted the mangled bodies of autorickshaws and head-on collision of lorries with glass-panes strewn all over the place and belongings of the victims lying at the spot. The SI, highway patrolling, G. Mahesh Babu informed the people who gathered to enquire about the accident that it was only a mock show. He also distributed pamphlets to drivers and the passengers about traffic rules for safe travel.

Medical camp

KHAMMAM: In all 1,222 patients were treated at the mega health camp organised in Bhadrachalam on the second day on Friday. Specialist from the SWIMS and the Nagarjuna Hospital took part in the camp. A number of cases pertaining to skin problems were also treated.

Suspended

KHAMMAM: The village secretary of Pedagopati, Valim Ahmad, was placed under suspension for failing to consider the issue of ration cards to 23 applicants who were found to be eligible, according to the Collector, Arvind Kumar. A show cause notice was also served on the mandal revenue officer of Konijerla for failing consider applications for ration cards. The Civil Supplies Officer, G. Chennaiah, conducted an enquiry on the ration cards issue.

Ex-APCO chief's kin among three die in mishap Cuddapah: The son and grandson of the former APCO chairman and Congress leader, Bandi Hanmanthu, were among three persons who died when the van in which they were travelling collided head-on with an RTC bus near a sub-station in Vemula town in Cuddapah district on Friday night.

Naxals kill TRS activist KARIMNAGAR: Suspected naxalites belonging to the Janashakthi group shot dead an agriculturalist and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) activist branding him an informer in Bandalingampalli village of Yellareddypet mandal tonight.

The Sircilla DSP, M Ravi Prakash, said three Janashakthi Manair dalam naxalites led by the CO, Srisailam, went to the house of K. Raji Reddy (56) and shot him dead by opening five rounds of fire.
