CHENNAI, FEB. 13. The Tamil Nadu Assembly today adjourned sine die after a brief session spread over 10 days. On the last day, it adopted supplementary estimates for Rs. 3,159.72 crores for the remaining months of the current year. This included Rs. 175 crores for extending share capital assistance to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Rs. 150 crores to Chennai Metrowater for tackling water scarcity in the city, Rs. 100 crores to the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board for undertaking supply works in the State, Rs. 75.45 crores to the Rural Development department for works in rural areas and Rs. 53 crores to the Handlooms, Handicraft, Textiles and Khadi department for procurement of an additional 30 lakh polycot sarees and 37 lakh dhoties for free distribution.
Depositors Bill
A Bill to amend the Tamil Nadu Protection of Interests of Depositors (in financial establishments) Act 1997 conferring more powers on a special court was adopted. Explaining its objects and reasons, the Law Minister, D. Jayakumar, said that at present there was no specific provision in the Act enabling the special court to try other offences. So the case was split and the accused prosecuted for offences under other laws in regular courts. The amendment would now confer powers on the special court to try other offences also.
Cr.PC Bill withdrawn
The House withdrew the Code of Criminal Procedure (Tamil Nadu Second Amendment) Bill, 2002 as the President had returned it for reconsideration. The Bill was to amend Section 167(2) to empower a magistrate to extend the remand period of an accused from 15 to 30 days.
