Billiards & Snooker
By Kirti Patil
GWALIOR, FEB. 13. India's lone pro Manan Chandra and former champion Ashok Shandilya were given a raw deal by the novices on a day of upsets in the National snooker championship at the Jiwaji University here on Friday. Twice Asian champion Yasin Merchant would have been the third casualty, but he survived by the piece of black ball in the third frame. That black ball helped the three time national champion, Merchant, to rally from 0-2 and win the next four frames straight. While some of these established names were shaken, the Asian Games gold medallist Rafath Habib made a strong claim for the pre-quarterfinal berth with his third straight win in group `D' league. Manan Chadra, who plays on the UK Challenge Tour was given a rude awakening. First, unknown Pankaj Sood first stretched him to five frames, and later in the evening Mohammed Asim doused his spirits with a 4-0 blanking. In his group `H' league match, Shandilya allowed Neeraj Kumar of Bihar to rally from 1-2. Shandilya then even the frames at 3-3 but Neeraj came up with a decent but crucial break of 31 in the decider, which he won 74-37. Shandilya was up for a shock again. In the afternoon, Anuj Uppal led 2-0, but Shandilya stayed in contention for the pre-quarterfinal berth with a 26-59, 0-88, 62-51, 58-2, 67-39, 77-36 win.
