UDUPI, FEB. 13 . The Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, K. Sundar Naik, on Friday stressed the need for awareness on consumer rights. Speaking after inaugurating the District Consumer Information Centre here, Mr. Naik said the centre would give information on consumer protection. After the Government passed the Consumer Protection Act, it found that to implement the Act, the norms and regulations had to percolate to the grassroots. The centre would give information on poverty alleviation, employment generation and other programmes launched by the Government to the beneficiaries of these schemes. It would also give information on the Panchayat Raj Act to the local bodies. It would have a tie up with the Department of Civil Supplies in the district, he said. It would prepare an action plan and get it approved by the zilla panchayat.
