KOCHI, FEB. 13. The Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) national president, Thampan Thomas, has said that the trade unions should unite to force the political parties to adopt suitable economic and financial policies for employment-led development in the country. Addressing a `Meet-the-Press' programme organised by the Ernakulam Press Club, Mr. Thomas said that major trade unions had accepted the need for a joint trade union movement in the country. He said that the trade unions should try to forge partnerships with other social organisations. A concerted effort would force the Government to look into the problems faced by workers and unemployed youth in a period of economic liberalisation and globalisation, he added. Mr. Thomas said that the 30th biennial convention of the Sabha held in Nagpur had asserted that the Government's `India Shining' campaign and `feel good factor' had not helped in solving the unemployment problem. He said that the number of jobs in the country had gone down following implementation of the exit policies in the name of economic reforms. He said that the Government had failed to keep its promise of creating one crore jobs every year in the country. The convention had observed that the labour laws should be amended, he said. Mr. Thomas said that the Government should also enact a law to regulate the procedure and conditions of the voluntary retirement schemes. The convention had reiterated its support to candidates who would support the cause of the workers. It had urged them to focus on issues of development and employment during the campaign for the coming general elections, Mr. Thomas said.
