KOZHIKODE, FEB. 14. The BJP State president, P. S. Sreedharan Pillai, today said there had been large-scale diversion of funds released by Central Government for drought relief work in the State. Addressing a press conference here today, the BJP leader alleged that the funds were used to build new roads in the constituency of a Minister. A portion of the funds was also used for road repair and construction in an Assembly constituency where the Minister's son was expected to contest elections. Mr. Sreedharan Pillai said the funds were sanctioned by the Central Government based on reports submitted by the State Government about the damage caused by drought in various districts. The loss in Palakkad district, according to Government estimates, was nearly Rs. 100 crores. However, instead of utilising the amount for drought relief work, these were diverted to the Minister's constituency in Kottayam district, Mr. Pillai alleged. Mr. Pillai said the State BJP's Parliamentary party would be meeting in Thiruvananthapuram to choose candidates for the coming Lok Sabha elections. He indicated O. Rajagopal and S. Krishna Kumar were likely to be fielded in Thiruvannathapuram and Mavelikkara respectively. Karunakaran, Murali criticised Our Staff Reporter writes from Pathanamthitta: The BJP State general secretary, P.P. Mukundan, has alleged that the Electricity Minister, K. Muraleedharan's demand that the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, apologise to the minorities in the State for his alleged "anti-minority'' statement a few months ago was aimed at the Muslim vote bank in the Assembly by-election he would have face in the next six months. Mr. Mukundan was talking to presspersons at Kozhencherry this afternoon. He said the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, had also stated that he still stuck to his demand for a leadership change in the State. According to the BJP leader, this was nothing short of a "shameful deceit'' of the general public as well as the party cadre by Mr. Karunakaran and his son. "Mr. Muraleedharan knew well that he was not going to win a by-election with out the help of the Muslim League and the Muslim community and hence his statement was aimed at luring the `organised' minority vote bank, simply sidelining the largely `disorganised' majority votes,'' Mr. Mukundan said. It was high time the people of Kerala realised this "plain truth'', he added. Mr Mukundan alleged that the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police were "afraid'' of publishing the Intelligence report on the Marad massacre as they very well knew that it would vindicate the BJP demand for a CBI probe into the incident. He also alleged that Mr. Antony was "scared'' of certain "powerful lobby'' within the ruling front. Now the IUML had begun to exert "undue pressure'' on the Chief Minister to implement the Narendran Commission report.
