Sonia announcement raises Congress hopes

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 14. The announcement of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, during her visit to Chennai yesterday that a decision on reallocation of the Pondicherry Lok Sabha seat to the party would be taken in a day or two has come as a shot in the arm for the rank and file of the ruling party.

Though the seat was allotted to the Pattali Makkal Katchi by the Democratic Progressive Alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, there had been persistent efforts by the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, and the Pradesh Congress Committee president, V. Narayanasamy, to get back seat for the party. Now the announcement by Ms. Sonia Gandhi has raised the hopes of party workers here.

If a positive decision comes, who will be the party's nominee is the question doing rounds among the party men. The aspirants include the member of the dissolved 13th Lok Sabha, M.O.H. Farook. But ultimately it is for the high command to take a final decision.

The party received a boost with the announcement of the merger of the Janata Dal (United) headed by the former Health Minister, V. Pethaperumal. Mr. Pethaperumal has convened a meeting of his party men here tomorrow to work out the merger modalities.
