NEW DELHI, FEB. 14. The Central Bureau of Investigation registered 116 cases of corruption against 170 public servants across the country in January. The exercise is part of the ongoing drive of the agency to curb corruption among public servants. According to a CBI spokesperson, of the 170 public servants accused of corruption, 130 were gazetted officers. Officials from income tax, health and customs departments have figured prominently in the list. Of the 116 cases, 15 were registered on directions from the Supreme Court and the High Court. Last year, the CBI had registered 112 cases during the same period. The agency laid traps in 24 cases and arrested the accused when they were allegedly accepting bribe. A Deputy Director, Income Tax (New Delhi), was caught when he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000 as the first instalment. He had allegedly demanded Rs. 3 lakhs from the complainant for a favourable income tax assessment.
