KOCHI, FEB. 14. West Zone and Central posted contrasting wins and entered the final of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy National under-19 inter-zone cricket championship on Saturday. West, as expected, crushed East by 237 runs at the Ambalamugal KRL Oval, near Kochi, while Central pulled off a one-wicket victory over defending champion North at the Fort Maidan in Palakkad. Both West and Central won their four-day semifinals with a day to spare. Palakkad will host the four-day final from February 18 to 21. West, overnight 220 for seven in its second innings, boosted its total to 292 with the last-wicket pair of Arif Sunasara (59, 93b, 3x4, 4x6) and Vikrant Yelligati putting on 62 runs. A little more than an hour later, Sunasara (three for 53) and Yelligati (four for 41), both spinners, were in the thick of things again as East crashed to 168, the same total it had scored in the first innings. Only the talented Avik Chowdhury, who came up with some stylish strokes, offered some resistance with an unbeaten half-century (53, 88b, 4x4, 2x6).
West Zone 281 and 292 (Rakesh Solanki 111, Rakesh Kanojia 26, Arif Sunasara 59, Gautam Sahoo four for 109, Priyankar Mukherjee three for 74) bt East Zone 168 and 168 (Avik Chowdhury 53 not out, Vikrant Yelligati four for 41, Arif Sunasara three for 53).
North Zone 251 and 207 (Pritpal Singh 26, Gaurav Sharma 29, Gaurav Gupta 47, Akshay Wakhare six for 79, Avinash Yadav four for 70) lost to Central Zone 240 and 220 for nine (Shan C. Alam 99, Sachin Rana five for 34).
