Rs.22.10 cr. works completed in Virudhunagar dt.

VIRUDHUNAGAR, FEB.14 . The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, inaugurated in Chennai on Wednesday 3600 development works completed at a cost of Rs.22.10 crores in Virudhunagar district.

In a statement, the Collector, A. Mohammed Aslam, said 357 group houses were constructed at a cost of Rs.1.14 crores for the benefit of people living below poverty line and another 393 `kachcha' houses upgraded at a cost of Rs.39.30 lakhs. As many as 111 buildings at a rate of Rs.one lakh each were built for members of self-help groups to conduct their periodical meetings and to exhibit the products manufactured by them.

A total of Rs.5.21 crores was spent on completing 83 drinking water projects under the Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water and Sanitation Programme, with 10 per cent public contribution.

The district administration had spent Rs. 201.32 lakhs for deepening and desilting 300 water tanks for harvesting rainwater and another Rs. 79.80 lakhs for constructing 133 threshing floors. A total of 1667 minor works, such as construction of drainage channels and small bridges, were undertaken at a cost of Rs. 10.47 crores.

Other development works inaugurated by the Chief Minister included 14 new roads (Rs.22 crores), two integrated sanitary complexes (Rs.4.50 lakhs) and four office buildings for village administrative officers (Rs.2.8 lakhs).

The Chief Minister laid foundation stones for upgrading 282.45-km roads by the Highways department at a cost of Rs. 16.41 crores, laying 15.5 km. long polymer-blended metal roads at a cost of Rs.82.85 lakhs in rural areas and eight new roads measuring 12.10 km. under the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana at a cost of Rs. 154 lakhs.
