`Postal dept. should give better service to face competition'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, FEB. 14 . The Postal department personnel, who render yeomen service to the public, should provide better service to their customers, as the department has to successfully face the challenges being posed by private organisations, the Collector, Sunil Paliwal, said.

Inaugurating `Nellaipex — 2004', a three-day district-level philatelic exhibition at St. John's College auditorium here yesterday, Mr. Sunil Paliwal said the services of banks, which once were open only to the privileged sections, reached even the downtrodden after nationalisation.

However, the scenario took another interesting turn when private players entered the banking sector with a big bang.

"Now all banking operations have become more customer-friendly following this cut-throat competition from the private banks. And the Department of Posts should also rise to the occasion to tackle the stiff contest they now face (from private courier service operators)," he appealed.

The principal, St. John's College, J. Balasingh, said over 300 million persons across the globe were involved in the hobby of philately, which had a humble beginning in England in May, 1840 when Sir Rowland Hill started collecting stamps. He appealed to the parents to encourage their wards to become philatelists, which would not only keep them vibrant but also well informed.

The Postmaster General (in-charge), Madurai Region, Hilda Abraham, released a special cover on `Traditional Costumes — Silk Sarees' and the manager, Rm.K.V., N. Subramanian, received the first cover.

T.S.M.O. Hassan, news correspondent, All India Radio, Tirunelveli and K.K. Sharma, Director, Postal Services, Madurai Region also spoke.
