People's Conference faces split
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR,
FEB. 14.
The People's Conference faced a split today with its representative in the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, Bilal Lone removing his brother Sajjad Lone as the chairman of the party.
Soon after returning from Kupwara this evening, Mr. Bilal told presspersons that in the wake of "his anti-movement activities I have removed him (Sajjad Lone) as chairman of the People's Conference and also dissolved the executive body. Referring to Mr. Sajjad Lone's stand over the issue of joining the funeral prayers of top al-Umar commander, Rafiq Lidri, by senior Hurriyat leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, he said the movement was at a "crucial stage" and he acted in "highly irresponsible manner".
Mr. Sajjad has sought an explanation from the Mirwaiz and had written a letter to the Hurriyat chairman, Abbas Ansari. He never took me into confidence on important issues," he said.
