Jail official found with criminals

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 14. A Deputy Superintendent of Tihar Central Jail was allegedly found hobnobbing with two alleged criminals who were arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police in an operation in West Delhi on Friday. The Jail official is being questioned.

According to the police, the Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch, under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ravi Shanker, had laid a trap near Hari Nagar bus depot in West Delhi on Friday following a tip-off. Four suspects appeared on the scene in a Honda City and a Maruti WagonR. The police team zeroed-in on them and arrested two persons, identified Satender Pal Singh and Yogesh Saini. To their surprise, the police also found a Deputy Superintendent of Tihar Central Jail, Ved Prakash Garg, with them. Meanwhile, two of the suspects, identified as Ajay, a property dealer, and Harpal Singh, Satender's brother, managed to escape.

The police have recovered a German and an Italian pistol from the accused along with the two cars. The Honda City belongs to Ajay.

Ved, who allegedly failed to explain his presence at the spot and association with the accused, is being interrogated by the Crime Branch.

Satender and Yogesh had been declared Proclaimed Offenders in a case of criminal assault reported from South Delhi on October 7 in 2002. A girl was allegedly chased in her car from India Gate, kidnapped at gun-point in Amar Colony and then assaulted in flat in Alaknanda, South Delhi.

Earlier, Satender, a registered bad character of Karol Bagh police station, and Yogesh had become infamous after they shot dead two alleged criminals in the premises of Tis Hazari courts back in 1997. Satender, who had graduated from Khalsa College and taken admission in a law course went on to indulge in extortions, settling fights over disputed properties. Yogesh was introduced to him by a common friend. They were arrested but were acquitted during trial when the eyewitness, Deepak, turned hostile.

In 1998, Satender was also allegedly involved in planning a large-scale explosion in the Capital in connivance with Punjab terrorists. However, the Crime Branch had seized the consignment of 18 RDX from Punjabi Bagh in West Delhi. At that time, Satender was in jail and he had also plans to get the terrorists trigger explosions in the Jail too.

The police are now trying to ascertain the connection of Ved Prakash with the alleged criminals. A case has been registered at Hari Nagar police station and further investigations are on.
