`Expedite work on MIT flyover'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, FEB. 14. The delay over the implementation of the MIT flyover project was among the major grievances over which residents of Pallavaram staged a day-long dharna on Saturday.

The residents, who staged the protest under the banner of the Federation of Residents and Civic Welfare Associations of Pallavaram, said the project was incessantly delayed ever since the foundation stone was first laid in 1999. They alleged that a proper plan for the flyover was still not drawn.

There were also problems over land acquisition. A section of landowners said the highways department had not struck to its original promise that no private land would be acquired for the project. The residents also protested the delay in launch of underground drainage system work by the Pallavaram municipality. They said Rs 2.5 crore was mobilised for the project by the welfare associations over three years ago.

Other demands included provision of adequate water supply and a separate garbage-dumping yard.
