`Renewable energy beneficial to small units'

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, FEB. 14. Use of renewable and non-conventional energy sources by small and tiny industrial units will reduce pollution and cost of power in the long term.

This was conveyed by N.P. Singh, adviser, Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, at a seminar organised here today by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) for small and tiny industrial units.

Power from renewable energy sources would be viable and cost-effective for small and tiny units, especially those engaged in food processing, he said.

K. Allaudin, TEDA chairman and managing director, said the initial investment on generating power from renewable and non-conventional sources of sources was negligible compared to the benefits that would accrue in the long run to industrial units.

The benefits of harnessing the potential of renewable and non-conventional sources of energy would be manifold vis-à-vis the cost of thermal power for energy-intensive industrial units. The Minister for Rural Industries, K. Pandurangan, said there was a need to enhance awareness of alternative sources of energy as its use would reduce pollution.

K.V. Kanakambaram, president, Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association, said efforts would be initiated to popularise power generation from renewable energy sources in the industrial estate at Guindy. N. Vasudevan, director of industries and commerce, and K. Gopalakrishnan, president, Industrial Estate Manufacturers' Association, Guindy, spoke.
