Call to make India a quality destination

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, FEB. 14 . The former CBI Director and Director General of the National Human Rights Commission, D.R. Karthikeyan, stressed the need to enhance the investment in building up infrastructure for medical care, and make India a destination in quality medical care.

He was speaking at the 30th anniversary celebrations of the KG Hospital at the KG Campus in Saravanmapatti, here. Citing the progress that India and also places like Coimbatore have made in terms of medical facilities, he said that with the availability of more super specialty facilities, the gap between India and USA had been bridged to a considerable extent.

To make India a developed country, and to achieve the Almata declaration of the World Health Organisation (WHO) in providing health care for all, he said that India should bring in more managerial strategies. As per WHO "good health is not just absence of ailment, it should be an indication of happiness, joy and prosperity".

Though life expectancy had increased and maternal and infant mortality rates have come down, the number of TB cases and adult population prone to AIDS were disturbing. He lauded the gesture of the Government in bringing down import duty on life-saving drugs by nearly 20 per cent to promote health care delivery systems. The Indian medical facilities were said to be worth $ 17 billion. Owing to prohibitive cost of medical care, Britain was contemplating on flying its patients to countries like India.

Swami Sri Balagangadharanatha of Adichunchanagiri Maha Samasthana Mutt of Karnataka who presided over the function conferred the title `Vaidya Seva Ratna' on Dr. Bhaktavatchalam, the Chairman of KG Hospitals. The Swami also gave away the Star of KG awards to 30 doctors of the hospital.
