The Indian Express chosen for the IPI India award

NEW DELHI, FEB. 15. The English daily The Indian Express has been chosen for the first IPI India Award for its reporting of the Gujarat riots and the aftermath, it was announced here today.

The Indian Chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI), the Vienna-based global forum of editors, publishers and senior executives from the media, said that its journalism award for 2003 has gone to The Indian Express for its ``fearless and comprehensive'' reporting of the ``Gujarat riots and the aftermath of the tragedy'' as the best example of furtherance of public interest by a newspaper.

The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, will present the award that carries Rs. two lakh, a trophy and a citation, to the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, Shekhar Gupta, on February 23.

The jury, headed by Justice A.S. Anand, Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), chose The Indian Express from among 24 entries from print, electronic media and individual journalists.
