Seeking `Payyoli Express'

MUMBAI, FEB. 15. Nawal El-Moutawakel-Bennis, a surprise visitor to the Mumbai International Marathon, is on the lookout for P.T. Usha, her competitor in the 400m hurdles final at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The Morocco hurdler wishes to celebrate 20 years of Olympic victory at home in Casablanca on August 8, 2004 and would like to know whether the Indian track queen will be available to grace the occasion. "I have the cassette of the LA race. Everytime I watch it I cry. The experience was so emotional, so much happened around me that it took a long time to register. I will sit with Usha and find out what had happened," said the ex-Olympic champion, who flew into Mumbai on Sunday morning from Lucknow, where she was an invitee to the Sahara family wedding.

Nawal talked about Usha with respect. "The LA 400m hurdles final was the first time two women from developing countries qualified for an Olympic final, one from Africa and another from Asia. It was a proud moment for both, especially after the media starting discussing about us. I became the first Moroccan woman to win an Olympic title, also the first Muslim woman to do so. I guess Usha's achievement of making an Olympic final was equally significant," she said.

Nawal now a Counsel Member of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), track and field's government body and involved in the Casablanca Run for Fun, a 10k race exclusively for women said, "I am happy she is promoting athletics in her own way. Once you have tasted the high of success, it becomes difficult to come down to people's level and help out others. Usha has shown that fame has not affected her outlook."
