Silver medal for dancer

Cuddapah: A student of Annamacharya Vignana Peetham here, V.V. Sumalatha, bagged silver medal for her classical dance at the annual convention organised by the A.P. Academy of Sciences and Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology at Hyderabad recently, the Correspondent of the Peetham, Alluri Venkataiah, said in a statement on Sunday.

Office-bearers elected

TIRUPATI: Dealers of television and other electronic appliances in the town came together to form the Forum for Electronics Dealers (FED) on Sunday. The new office-bearers are P. Sudarshan Raju (president), G.S. Vijaykumar (vice-president), T. Suresh (general secretary), M.V. Prabhakar (joint secretary), M. Srinivasulu (treasurer), A. Ravichandran (organising secretary), N. Srihari (convenor). K. Rangaswamy and S.S. Gouse Basha were selected honorary advisers.

Boy run over by tractor

Cuddapah: A 15-year-old boy, Anjaneyulu, was run over by a tractor near Ankalamma temple on Mydukur-Porumamilla road in Mydukur mandal on Sunday. The boy was walking along the road when the tractor hit him. The Mydukur police registered a case.

Congress campaign

TIRUPATI: As part of the `Intintiki Congress' programme, the former Vice-Chairman of the Tirupati Municipality, P. Prasannakumar Reddy, conducted a door-to-door campaign in Korlagunta area of the town on Sunday to spread awareness among public on the TDP-BJP ``misrule.''

`Chekumuki' talent test

TIRUPATI: `Chekumuki' talent test was conducted by the Tirupati unit of the Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) on Saturday. S. Deepti Priya, Harsha Deepak and V.K. Dineshkumar (Sri Venkateswara High School) and G. Praveen Kumar, S. Munvar and S. Dheerendra (SV High School) came first in the English and Telugu media respectively. The two teams will take part at the district-level test to be conducted on February 22 here, according to a release.

TIRUPATI: he 87th birth anniversary of the Communist revolutionary leader, Tarimela Nagi Reddy, was celebrated by the Unity Centre of the Communist Revolutionaries of India (UCCRI M-L) at Jeevakona here on Sunday. R.V.K. Satyanarayana, State general secretary of the OPDR, and the district president, T. Murali, and G. Bhaskar of the UCCRI (M-L) spoke.

JAC plans agitation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Joint Action Committee of Employees, Teachers and Workers has resolved to organise agitation if the State Government failed to issue orders on the Pay Revision Commission within two days and take a decision on the release of five DA instalments to pensioners before February 20.

A press release issued by the JAC here on Sunday stated that the agitations would include a `chalo Hyderabad rally.' A meeting of the JAC's executive committee, attended by about 200 members, here on Saturday discussed at length the delay by the State Government in constituting the PRC, non-payment of DA to four lakh pensioners and non-implementation of agreed demands.

Naxalite killed in encounter

WARANGAL: A naxalite was killed in an exchange of fire with the police in the forest area of Kothaguda mandal here in the wee hours of Sunday.

According to the Superintendent of Police, Nalin Prabhat, a rifle and other material were recovered from the spot. The police intensified combing operation in the area.

In a separate incident, naxalites assaulted a trader Md. Mahmood and his mother Amina Bee at Eturunagaram late last night. Both of them received bullet injuries in the attack. Naxalites had been demanding money from the trader for the past many days.

When naxalites tried to kill him, his mother raised alarm. Sensing trouble from neighbours of the trader, naxalites fled the scene opening fire in which the two sustained injuries.

Arms dump unearthed

KHAMMAM: The police unearthed an arms dump of the CPIML (New Democracy) dalams near Surveytanda in Yellandu sub-division on Sunday. Seven weapons and 350 rounds of ammunition were seized. The police stepped up combing operation in the area as political parties are gearing up to launch their campaign for the coming elections.

CRPF jawan ends life

WARANGAL: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan, Sant Ram, attached to the Venkatapur police station shot himself dead here on Sunday.

Sant Ram, belonging to the 83 Battalion of the CRPF, was said to have resorted to the extreme step due to family problems. He belonged to Madhya Pradesh.

Power supply

position improves

HYDERABAD: There was an improvement in power supply position on Sunday with the two units of BSES Project rejoining the grid, giving 180 MW, but power cut continued in villages as the Simhadri first unit remained outage.

A Transco spokesman said that the load relief was being taken to the extent of 200 MW to 250 MW, working out to nearly five million units, implying a cut for duration of over four hours in rural areas. He said the Simhadri unit might resume functioning tomorrow.

The Transco was contemplating operating naptha-run and diesel-run plants of Lanco and LVS, the official said.

Appointed pay panel chief

HYDERABAD: The Government has appointed J. Rambabu, former Special Chief Secretary, as the Commissioner of the Eighth Pay Commission for State Government employees, according to a press release.

The terms of reference of the commission as also those of the PRC will be specified. The State Cabinet on January 6 approved the constitution of the PRC.

Sarpanches' federation

president launches fast

Rajahmundry: The president of Andhra Pradesh Sarpanches' Federation, Padala Venkatrama Reddy, on Sunday launched indefinite fast at his house in Komaripalem village in Biccavolu mandal in East Godavari district demanding, among other things, devolution of funds and responsibilities as envisaged in the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution.

Speaking to newsmen, Mr. Reddy charged the State Government with diverting funds released by the Centre for development of villages.

Mr. Reddy demanded steps to implement all GOs of the Panchayat Raj Department. Though the demands of sarpanches were brought to the notice of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, no action was taken, he said.

NSS youth festival

TIRUPATI: State-level youth festival of the National Service Scheme (NSS) began here on Saturday. NSS volunteers from universities like Andhra (Waltair), Kakatiya (Warangal), ANGRAU (Rajendranagar), NTR University of Health Sciences (Vijayawada), Nagarjuna (Guntur), Dravidian (Kuppam), Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (Tirupati), Sri Krishna Devaraya (Anantapur), JNTU, Telugu University and Osmania (all Hyderabad) are taking part in the festival. Taking part as the chief guest, K.Vasavan, Assistant Programme Adviser, NSS regional centre, explained the significance of the event and the role of cultural activities in society. He observed that such festivals were important to unearth the hidden talent among the youth.

Earlier, a rally, flagged off by the Registrar, T. Siddiah, at NSS Bhavan, went round the campus.

Dry weather prevails

HYDERABAD: Dry weather prevailed in the State on Sunday also. The minimum temperature fell at one or two places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and changed little in Telangana and Rayalaseema. It was below normal in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema and also at many places in Telangana. The lowest night temperature of 15 degree Celsius was recorded by Arogyavaram and Kalingapatnam. Mainly sunny weather will prevail on Monday.

Passport cell set up

WARANGAL: A Passport Application Receipt Cell (PARC) has been set up at the District Police Office, which would come into operation from February 16. In a statement, the Superintendent of Police, Nalin Prabhat, urged the public to avail of the facility. Application forms can also be had from the cell. The cell working at the district Collectorate has been closed.

Recruitment test postponed

WARANGAL: The physical efficiency test and written test for recruitment of constables have been postponed indefinitely. According to the SP, the physical efficiency test scheduled for February 16 and written test on March 14 have been postponed. A fresh schedule would be intimated through the newspaper at a later date, he added.

`Rasta roko' by APYC activists

WARANGAL: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) staged a `rasta roko' and burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, protesting unwarranted remarks against the Congress here on Sunday. The members led by APYC general secretaries -- Rajanala Srihari and K. Sekhar Goud -- staged a sit in at the busy Warangal crossroads. They said the ruling TDP was apprehensive about its prospects in the forthcoming elections and was making unwarranted remarks in desperation.

Symposium on AIDS held

NIZAMABAD: The Nizamabad municipal chairperson, P. Bharati Rani, has said that women play a vital role in preventing the spread of AIDS.

She was speaking at a symposium on AIDS, organised by the Directorate of Field Publicity and ESI Dispensary, for beedi workers, here on Sunday. The District Medical and Health Officer, Krishna Rao, said steps were being taken to provide HIV testing facility in Government hospitals. The District AIDS Control Society nodal officer, R. Thimmaiah, urged the pregnant women to utilise the free HIV testing facility at the district headquarters hospital. The Field Publicity Officer, I. Hari Babu, and ESI dispensary medical officer, M. R. Dwaraka Devi, spoke.

Beedi workers' rally today

NIZAMABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Beedi Workers Union has urged beedi workers to join the rally and dharna programme being organised by the union on February 16 at Nizamabad. The union general secretary, V. Krishna, in a statement on Sunday said that the rally would start from ITI grounds and proceed to the Collectorate where a dharna would be staged. Beedi workers from Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Warangal and Mahabubnagar districts would participate. The protest is being organised against the deliberate promotion of Vardi beedi by the beedi manufacturers.
