MANGALORE, FEB. 15. The Central Areca-nut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd. (CAMPCO) has submitted a memorandum to Minister for Cooperation, H. Vishwanath, urging him to implement a market intervention scheme for "challie adike'' (a variety of areca nut). A delegation of CAMPCO headed by its Managing Director, J.R. Krishnadas, and the directors, Krishnaraj Urs, and B. Nagaraj, called on Mr. Vishwanath in Bangalore in this regard recently. A CAMPCO press release here say good returns from areca nut cultivation, a prime horticultural crop of the region, are the only ray of hope for thousands of farmers who depend on it for their survival. The delegation informed the Minister that thousands of farmers with small holdings in areca-nut growing regions will benefit if the Government implements a market intervention scheme. The Government's decision to purchase 30,976 quintals of areca nut at Rs. 60 a kg. under the scheme last year stabilised the market. The Rs. 6 crore allocated by the Government for the purpose was returned to it.
