Two killed in road accidents

BANGALORE, FEB. 15. Two persons were killed in two road accidents in the city on Saturday.

Shankarappa (49), pedestrian, was run over by an autorickshaw on 12th Cross, Magadi Main Road, on Saturday evening. He died on the way to a hospital. He was identified as a resident of Venkatapura at Bangarpet of Kolar district. Magadi Road Traffic Police have seized the autorickshaw.

In another accident at JaiBhuvaneshwarinagar in Nandini Layout, a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus knocked down a moped rider, Subbarayudu (40), on Saturday. The victim, a resident of Siddharthanagar in Jalahalli, died on the way to the hospital. The driver of the bus has been arrested.

Narrow escape: Two autorickshaw drivers, Prakash and Bhaskar, escaped with minor injuries when a tree fell on their vehicles near Movieland cinema in Upparpet Police Station limits on Saturday.

The police said the two autorickshaws were damaged. The officials of the Forest Department and Bangalore Mahanagara Palike had been asked to cut the branches of old trees, but to no avail, said a police officer.

Mobile phones recovered: Kalasipalyam police have arrested two men accused of stealing mobile phones. Eight phones worth about Rs. 40,000 were recovered from them, the police said.

The names of the arrested were given as Noorullah (26) of Siddlagatta in Kolar district and Babu, alias Sayid (20) of Hosagurappanapalya. They had allegedly picked phones from Kalasipalyam bus stand, Pradeep Circle, and K.R. Market bus stand. They would divert attention of the mobile phone owner before stealing the gadgets, the police said.

Recovered: In a quick breakthrough, Hebbal police have solved the mystery behind the theft of 14 signal boards, grill works, hand railings, and pipe fencing from the recently inaugurated Hebbal flyover. The articles were recovered from five persons, who were spotted moving suspiciously near the Hebbal Lake Park on Saturday morning. The accused were identified as Lakshmana (22), Anneyappa (30), Prakash (19), and Annappa (18), all of Hebbal, and Mahesh (29) of Mandya, the police said. Hebbal Police have taken up a case.

Gang nabbed: A four-member gang was arrested by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) on charges of stealing rail wheel cut pieces worth Rs. 1.5 lakh from the Rail Wheel Factory at Yelahanka.

Railway Police said the accused, Siraj, Omprakash Singh, Madivannan, and Alexander D, were taking the stolen goods in a truck when they were intercepted by the RPF on Old Madras Road. The goods were recovered and the truck was seized, the police said.
