Three hurt in car-bus collision

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, FEB. 15. A bus carrying Sabarimala pilgrims collided head-on with a car and overshot the carriageway, missing a steep slope on the side by just a few feet, at Thykoodam, near Vyttila, on NH 47.

The accident took place just a few feet away from the bridge at Thykoodam at around 6.15 p.m. today.

Two youth who were travelling in the Santro car have been admitted to the Lakeshore Hospital, with serious injuries. They are Siju Mohammed (21) of Chandiroor, Chertala and Rakesh (21) of Nenvelithara, Eramaloor.

Those in the bus had a miraculous escape.

Eye-witnesses said that the car had rammed into the bus while it was overtaking a van. The bus driver lost control, following which it overshot the carriageway and the road shoulder and rested with its wheels and undercarriage on the mud on the steep slope.

The Volvo bus (KA-14-D-1), which was resting with a slant of about 35 degrees, was tied using nylon ropes to a recovery van of the police and a crane.

It was then that the bus passengers got out. One of them, who was standing on the door, fell off the bus, but escaped with minor injuries. The bus was put in position by around 10 p.m. after two private cranes were brought in. Traffic came to a halt on the highway for around four hours following the accident. Vehicles were diverted from the Vytilla and Kundanoor junctions.
